The Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) is driving the Smart Meter National Programme (SMNP) to replace legacy mechanical meters with Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). These smart meters utilize cellular (4G/5G) or RF mesh communication networks to transmit real-time consumption telemetry to DISCOMs. The system enables automated billing, remote connections and disconnections, and real-time load balancing, eliminating manual meter reading errors and reducing aggregate technical and commercial (AT&C) losses.

Data-Driven Metrics

  • Deployment Scale: Over 10 million smart meters have been installed across participating states, with a long-term target of replacing 250 million meters nationwide.
  • Billing Efficiency: DISCOMs deploying AMI report billing efficiency improvements of up to 99%, leading to a direct recovery of lost distribution revenues.
  • Peak Demand Management: Real-time consumption data allows DISCOMs to implement load-curtailment strategies, stabilizing local grids during peak summer demand.

Strategic Vector

DISCOMs must establish robust data processing pipelines to handle the massive volume of high-frequency consumption pings, using the data to optimize power-purchase agreements.
